“Do you want familiar garbage or unfamiliar gold?”

Sitting in my living room over thirty years ago, I was contemplating whether I wanted to totally commit myself to God when those words floated through my mind.

It might seem to you like there wouldn’t be a struggle between familiar garbage and unfamiliar gold. Yet, there was. You would think that leaving behind the stench and filth that came from living in the emotional pig pen with an alcoholic, abusive husband would be easy; but it wasn’t. The garbage was familiar and the gold that was being offered was unfamiliar.
