Heather McAuliffe grew up in Seattle. She experienced Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) for the first time when she spent lots of time indoors studying during college, and again later after she worked fulltime in an office. She found that her mood and energy increased through adding light therapy. She was curious to know how much light she was being exposed to year round, however, so she took light measurements indoors and outdoors for a year. She was surprised to find that the light outdoors in Seattle, on average, is equivalent to the amount of light from a 10,000 lux therapeutic light box. She decided to write a book about her experiences in order to help others find ways to meet their needs for light through spending more time outdoors and supplementing with light therapy.
