In the Summer of 2017, I took two months off work and traveled around the United States with nothing but a camera and a handful of naive imaginings of travel photography and adventure.

Throwing caution to the wind is good in theory, but I soon found the loss of my comfort zone to be more of a burden than the thrill I had expected. The only thing that comforted the fear and self doubt was the camera in my hand and the photography that came, but everything in between felt difficult.

After returning home more lost than I began I turned to the imagery to help make sense of what felt like a wasted exploit. It was then, only in retrospect, that I relived the moments I had encountered. But this time the fear was gone and only the memories of the joy were left. The confidence that had eluded me in my time away came surging back as a realized the wonder of everything I had experienced.

So here's to retrospect and the lessons it teaches, sometimes long after the shutter has fallen.
