Acerca del libro
All This Beneath the Sky is an exploration of the City of Beijing in photographs and is an attempt to understand art, society and public space as it is created, contested and recreated in the City. The City has emerged as one of the preminent centres of contemporary Chinese art, serving up the country to the global art world.
The neighbourhoods where this global industry touches down within the city are shaped by the same forces of gentrification and patterns of reinvestment and displacement seen the world over.
From hutongs to factory districts to workers' villages, the city is seeing the gentrification of traditional and cultural landscapes, a process that is carefully monitored by local authorities here.
The global forces that would reshape the city are constrained, diverted or hidden from sight, creating fascinating, unintended and concealed forms of urbanism in the city centre and new suburban spaces.
This city can be perplexing to foreign observers expecting a view of a singular Chinese society. This photo journal looks into modern Beijing, its art and its culture. This journal observes the impact of the contemporary art market in neighbourhoods throughout the city.
