Portugal is a wonderful country to explore. I began in Lisbon, where a lofty fortress presides over a maze of hilly streets overlooking the Tagus River, the longest in the Iberian peninsula, just before it drains into the Atlantic. There are grand plazas, Roman and Moorish ruins, interesting churches and white-domed cathedrals, countless statues of important people, narrow cobblestone lanes and a fleet of busy trams. Oh and lots and lots of tiles, or azulejos as the Portuguese seem to call them. And the rest of the country is charming too ... Porto, the wine areas, the Algarve ...
