A travel story set in September and October, 2008 with emphasis on autumn color photography through the northeastern U.S.
I passed northward along the rocky coast of Lake Superior, and through the ancient bedrock of the Laurentian Highlands of Canada. I crossed the spectacular Niagara River at the falls back into the United States. I meandered through the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, part of the Northeast Appalachians, and on through the Green Mountains of Vermont. Continuing eastward through New Hampshire’s White Mountains, I then explored the rocky coastline of Maine. Drifting south into Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, I doubled back into western Massachusetts to see the Berkshires. Crossing into New York state again I passed through the Taconic Mountains east of the Hudson River, then on into the Catskills of southern New York. I soon found myself in Pennsylvania and I tarried briefly in the Poconos. Then a direction change to the southeast put me in the Hudson Highlands of northern New Jersey. Following my brief foray into Delaware I once again traversed part of the Appalachians by passing through the beautiful Allegheny Mountains of western Maryland and Pennsylvania. With the exception of the northern most passage through Canada, and southernmost venture into Delaware, I encountered spectacular color in at least parts of every state along the way, encompassing a period of almost four full weeks. There were small areas of very nice color in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. By the time I reached Wisconsin I had caught up with the peak of color again and I enjoyed it along the bluffs bordering the Mississippi River, through Minnesota, all the way home.
