In 1891, with its economy in the doldrums, a group of Jamaica business men calling themselves the "Awakening Jamaica" committee hired the studio of Valentine and Sons of Dundee, Scotland to do a photographic survey of their island to be displayed at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair to promote business and tourism in Jamaica.
