CADENCE is the term cyclists use to measure how fast they are peddling. The appropriate CADENCE is determined by the terrain, slope, and speed through which they are cycling. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, pedaling at the right CADENCE can make or break a cycling trip. In his book CADENCE, Bret Deardorff tells the story of a 6 day cycling journey that he took with three friends from work. Initially, just colleagues, they became inseparable friends through their preparation and over the course of their 6 day adventure. The book is a collection of blogs and over 350 photographs taken throughout the French Alps.



The trip was a fund raiser for a very worth while organization in the United Kingdom called Guide Dogs for the Blind. They provide a variety of services for sightless people including the training, care, and ongoing support of guide dogs who provide companionship and literally become the eyes for blind individuals. This was the fifth annual Le Tour Challenge sponsored by Guide Dogs, who sought to offer a unique fund raising opportunity for cyclists who, as payment for the trip, raised thousands of dollars of support for the Guide Dogs organization.
