In March of 2009, I was fortunate to be able to take a short trip back to my home city of London. My intention while there was to create images for this exhibition. On arrival I made a decision to shoot only with my favourite lens, a Lensbaby 3G, a lens that allows me to create images with a unique feel, as only a small portion of the image is in focus. In fact, in some images, I chose not to have any aspect of the image sharp.
I decided to use this technique as I wanted to create pieces that had a feel of a fleeting memory, or a glimpse of something as a snapshot in time. I recall visiting many places in London as a child, and many of those memories are hazier and “blurred” as I have become older. I was to spend a total of 3 solid days on the streets of my childhood, revisiting familiar places, dwelling with memories, and pondering how our perceptions of the past change as we grow older. I concentrated on familiar landmarks and locations, and also discovered a few more modern treats as well. Almost all of my day was spent on foot, walking from place to place, with only a few journeys on public transport. The result is a series of over 30 images, presented here.
My Lensbaby, my feet, my memories. I had a great time “Walking My Baby Back Home”, and I hope you enjoy these images too.
