The idea
I had the idea of this series of smoke photographs in the month of April 2020, when for safety reasons due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the German government advised us to go out of home only in case of need.
In normal situations I go out more or less regularly to take pictures for my YouTube channel for the series called “Photography on location” but because of the current situation I’ve decided to stay inside and to create some photographs for my other series called “Creative corner”, where I show some creative ideas for our photography which can be realised at home.
The photographs
The smoke coming from incense sticks creates interesting shapes and watching them burning it’s almost like watching a breakdance performer. The smoke changes direction, sometimes slowly and sometimes with repentine movements, it’s unpredictable and it leaves you mesmerized.
The smoke was photographed in front of a black background and was lit from the side with a regular speedlight controlled remotely from the camera.
I have then decided to add some colors to several photographs in post-production and in some cases I’ve also inverted the colors to have a white background.
